The Attorney General's Consumer Protection and Antitrust Division (CPAT) educates and assists consumers and businesses in consumer issues, including protecting the public from consumer fraud. |

Although the Office of Attorney General may not provide legal assistance to private individuals, CPAT is able to provide assistance, education and information to individuals on many varied consumer issues including telemarketing, computer and internet fraud, car repair scams, identify theft and home solicitations. CPAT enforces the state's consumer fraud laws, which prohibit misleading and deceptive practices concerning the sale or advertisement of merchandise. CPAT investigates and prosecutes consumer fraud cases, mediates individual consumer complaints, and educates the public on how to avoid becoming victims of fraud.CPAT also enforces violations of nonprofit corporation laws. The Attorney General and CPAT staff are available to speak on a variety of consumer related topics.
The CPAT Division also sponsors the LifeSmarts competition for North Dakota's High School students. Information on the LifeSmarts competition can be found on the Attorney General's web page at www.ag.nd.gov.
