USMEF is the most vertically integrated trade association in the meat and livestock industry. USMEF's stakeholders include meat packers, processors, purveyors, traders, agri-business companies, farm organizations, beef producers, pork producers, lamb producers, feed grain producers and oilseed producers.
Their mission is to increase the value and profitability of the U.S. beef, pork and lamb industries by enhancing demand for their products in export markets through a dynamic partnership of all stakeholders.
Based in Denver, Colorado, USMEF has market development offices located in Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Moscow, St. Petersburg, London, Mexico City and Monterrey. USMEF also has representatives covering South China, the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
USMEF carries out market development activities in more than 50 countries. These activities fall into three primary areas:
Trade Servicing:
- Gathering and disseminating market intelligence.
- Qualifying potential buyers and developing trade leads.
- Facilitating contact between suppliers and buyers through trade shows, seminars, and trade team visits to members' plants/facilities.
- Providing technical assistance with labeling questions, export documentation and product claims.
Product Promotion and Education:
- Building demand in international markets for U.S. red meat products through joint promotions with leading retailers and restaurants.
- Conducting meat schools and seminars to train a cadre of retail meat merchandising personnel and chefs who can deliver credible messages about the attributes of U.S. meat to their customers.
- Carrying out consumer education, advertising and public relations campaigns.
Market Access:
- Providing the U.S. government and industry partners with the market intelligence necessary to secure, maintain and develop fair and reasonable access to international markets.
USMEF receives funding from a variety of sources including membership dues, private contributions and commodity checkoff programs. As a cooperator with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, USMEF also receives funds from USDA's Market Access, Emerging Markets and Foreign Market Development Programs.
