USDA - ARS Red River Valley Agricultural Research Center Print
PURPOSE:
The Red River Valley Agricultural Research Center is part of the national research program of the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. The center occupies two federal laboratories on the campus of North Dakota State University. It also maintains a Wheat Quality Laboratory in an NDSU facility and operates the Potato Research Worksite in East Grand Forks, MN. Its research covers the effects of foreign chemicals in animals, explores new methods to control perennial weed and insect pests, tests wheat and oats to enhance quality, and improves the storage characteristics of sugarbeets and potatoes. The Center also develops improved germplasm for wheat, barley, sugarbeets, and sunflowers. The staff is composed of chemists, molecular biologists, geneticists, entomologists, pathologists, and physiologists.
PROGRAM:

  • Reduce the negative effects of foreign chemicals on animals used for food and in food processing.
  • Develop and expand knowledge on the physiology, genetics, and molecular biology of weeds to improve existing and discover new environmentally sustainable weed management strategies.
  • Investigate fundamental problems to improve the effectiveness of insects used in IPM programs for control of pest insects and weeds.
  • Improve the quality and profitability of sugarbeet and potato production through fundamental research on germplasm enhancement, crop protection, and postharvest physiology.
  • Provide basic knowledge and improved germplasm for developing, maintaining, and improving hard red spring wheat, durum wheat, barley, and oat.
  • Develop new knowledge and technology that benefit the sunflower industry and consumers.
