USDA - ARS Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory Print
PURPOSE:
To develop environmentally sound practices and add value to agricultural systems in the Great Plains in terms of food, feed and biomass by conducting team-focused, systems-oriented research and technology transfer.
PROGRAM:

  • Develop understanding of the impact of soil and crop ecology, plant diseases and crop residues on the quantity and quality of food and energy production.
  • Enhance soil quality and reduce soil erosion and other negative impacts.
  • Quantify impacts of combining perennials and annuals in Ag production systems.
  • Develop options to enhance the healthfulness of beef.
  • Evaluate and develop low-input opportunities for wintering and finishing cattle in the Northern Great Plains.
  • Develop annual cropping systems for increased profitability and reduced environmental impact in livestock production.
  • Develop innovative, new forages for more productive animal grazing.
  • Develop new strategies to revitalize northern native range for improved animal production.
  • Evaluate the effect of animal, grazing and dryland crop management on greenhouse gas flux in our environment.
  • Examine the ability of soil biological and rhizosphere processes that affect soil carbon cycling.
  • Integrate greenhouse-gas flux data for prevalent agricultural management systems in the Northern Great Plains to estimate their overall effect on radiative forcing of the atmosphere.
