| THE CHALLENGE: |
| |
A fundamental tenet of the EERC is that when business, government and research organizations form partnerships focused on providing technical solutions addressing society's needs, their combined resources and efforts are much more likely to succeed, providing benefits far beyond what can be accomplished individually. For this reason, partnerships and joint ventures with government and industry make up the very culture of the EERC.
The EERC recognizes that the demonstration and commercialization of innovative technologies is just as important as the initial research and development phases. The EERC's entrepreneurial, market-driven approach is the primary reason why more than 83 percent of its contracts are with private industry. This, combined with an emphasis on providing industry with practical, cost-effective solutions has helped the EERC forge an international reputation as a leading energy and environmental research facility.
For the past decade, the EERC has been guided by principle that energy and environment are inseparable. This understanding has been key to the EERC's evolution from a federal research center that focused on low-rank coal research to a research, development, demonstration and commercialization center that covers a wide range of energy and environmental topics and addresses critical, strategic environmental issues worldwide.
This approach enables the EERC to pursue initiatives in all fossil, renewable and alternative fuels; advanced power and energy systems; environmental chemistry; environmental control technologies; hydrogen production, distribution and fuel cell technology; waste utilization, management and site remediation; and water management.
|
| MISSION: |
| |
The EERC's mission is to improve global quality of life by providing leadership in visionary multidisciplinary research and development leading to demonstration and commercialization of innovative, clean and efficient energy and environmental technologies addressing the protection of air, water and soil worldwide.
|
| EERC CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE: |
| |
Throughout the last decade, the EERC's Centers of Excellence have been nationally recognized, even internationally acclaimed, as the premier effort in their respective topic areas by organizations such as the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
All of these centers have become vitally important to North Dakota and the region by drawing more opportunities for research, manufacturing and the evolution of new jobs. Through its Centers of Excellence, the EERC is clearly committed to moving technologies out of the laboratory and into the marketplace. Each Center has the potential to be the cornerstone for new spin-off companies.
The EERC Centers of Excellence include the following:
- Coal Utilization Technologies Center
- Emission Control Technologies Center
- National Center for Hydrogen Technology
- Center for Climate Change and CO 2 Sequestration
- Center for Air Toxic Metals CATM)
- Center for Renewable Energy
- Water Management Center
- National Alternative Fuels Laboratory (NAFL)
- Supercritical and Subcritical
- Extraction Technologies Center
- Coal Ash Research Center

BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
|
| |
Since 1987, the EERC has had more than 915 clients from all 50 states and 48 countries. In FY06, the EERC had 438 contracts, 92 percent of which were with non-federal entities. The EERC maintains a highly flexible business approach that facilitates tailoring contractual agreements to meet individual client needs.
